Advice: Never knowingly undersold

Don't undersell yourselfLast week we offered our MSFers some advice on sticking to the truth when writing their profile; that is, don't exaggerate too wildly because you'll end up trying to be something you're not, leaving both you and your date sorely disappointed. Today we're looking at the flipside of that advice and saying don't undersell yourself.

The British are known to be a humble bunch, given to self-deprecation and hiding their lights under bushels. Whilst this is an admirable trait, as nobody likes a show off, you need to be careful when putting together your dating profile not to push it too far. Happily, when you join mysinglefriend.com, your friend writes your description meaning that they can big up your best bits for you, thus helping you avoid the trickiest part of the process. However, you still need to write your response and you don't want to undo all their good work with some misplaced modesty.

The best thing you can do is use positive language as enthusiasm is an attractive trait. Even if your pleasures in life are very simple and don't extend further than cooking a nice meal and drinking a good glass of wine, don't play it down. Talk about what you like to cook, where you like to shop and what type of wine you like. If your hobby is something that might be considered a little on the geeky side like home brewing or an enthusiasm for board games, be positive about it. A little bit of passion goes a long way and, if you're honest about your interests, you're much more likely to find someone who is well suited to you.

The crucial thing with your response is to write something. The ultimate in playing-things-down is when MSFers write 'Thanks Fenella' or 'Get in touch if you'd like to know more'. If someone's read to the bottom of your profile, they want to know more already and denying them that by not writing much will quickly have them clicking away from your profile in exasperation. We're not saying you have to write a big long list of your achievements, but a couple of brief paragraphs written with warmth and spirit will show your potential date that you're genuinely looking to meet new people, and your inbox will be stuffed to bursting before you can say 'World of Warcraft'.
