Top 5 Action Dates

Category: Advice
Author: Karen

Dinner and drinks or a cup of coffee is your traditional first date fare, and very nice it is too, but what if you're more of a physical, outdoorsy type? Or what if you just fancy a change? Doing an activity together is a great idea for a first date as it gives you a focus and releases you from staring at each other across a table and feeling a bit awkward. Read on for our top 5 action dates.

1. Climbing

We're talking at your local climbing wall, rather than a remote cliff face. It's safer, easier and you won't get wet or cold. If you haven't been before and your date has you can show them how it's done and vice versa and if you're both beginners then you'll be starting on the same page. The only problem is the helmet will flatten your barnet, so be poised with wax or brush for your apres-climb beverage.

2. Skating

No, not on the ice, you can save that for Christmas. Don your roller boots or blades and get down to the park. Depending on your profficiency you can either go in straight lines on the flat bit or risk your neck with the youth in your local skate park. Hand holding opportunities aplenty with this one.

3. Caving

If you suggest this to someone as a first or early date and they agree then it's probably a match made in heaven. Caving isn't for the faint of heart but it's a popular pastime in the UK. You'll have to do it in a group and with an instructor but there will be plenty of opportunity for romance to bloom amongst the stalegmites and stalegtites. You definitely won't look cool in all the kit though, so be sure to make a good impression with your sparkling personality.

4. Mountain Biking

Not just along the road to the park, oh no, on an actual mountain. OK, maybe not a mountain but down a steep slope on some off-road, rough terrain. There are plenty of trails around where you can hire a bike and set off on an exhilarating and memorable date.

5. Kayaking

If you fancy being outdoors but you don't want to do anything too strenuous, kayaking is perfect. A gentle meander along the water, stopping at a riverside pub for a spot of lunch is surely one of the most romantic dates you could go on. And if you decide you're up for a challenge, you can ditch the meander, put your back into it and head for the rapids (if you're an experienced kayaker, of course).
