Top 5 Beach Dates
The lovely weather and general summery vibe got us to thinking about our favourite beach dates. It might seem an odd idea for a date, but actually there's an awful lot to do at the seaside. So, pack up your bucket and spade, jump on the train to your nearest coastal town and see what you think of these.
1. Beach volleyball
Beach volleyball somehow conjures up images of bronzed, beautiful Americans being very sporty. Or maybe Baywatch. But anyway, it's actually a very popular sport in the UK. Lots of beaches have ready-made courts, but what's to stop you drawing a court in the sand with a stick and making your own?
2. Sandcastle Competitions
This is a cracker for a first date. It alleviates that face-to-face conversation pressure that can make first dates a bit awkward and is a huge amount of fun. There are competitions in Newquay, Whitley Bay and Lancaster during August if you want to be all formal about it, but you could just go for the DIY approach: meet on the beach, go head to head and ask a nearby sunbather to be the judge.
3. Urban Beach SouthBank Centre
So, the obvious problem with beach dates is that you're a bit scuppered if you don't live near the coast. However, if you're in London this summer, you too can join in the fun and visit the urban beach which has been built on the SouthBank as part of the Festival of Britain anniversary celebrations. You can spend all your date playing with a bucket and spade and still get the tube home.
4. Surfing Lessons
Maybe not one for the first date as you'll be hard pressed to pick your date out from all the other wetsuited surfers if you've only just met each other and you won't have much opportunity for chat. If you're a few dates in though, this would be a lot of fun and a bit of a change. You can find surfing schools pretty much anywhere with a bit of coast and, bizarrely, you can even learn to surf indoors.
5. Piers
They're not strictly on the beach, more over the beach, but nevermind. There are 58 piers around the coast of the UK and a lot of fun can be had on all of them, whether you're on the big wheel in Brighton, taking tea on stylish Southwold Pier or running up and down Clevedon Pier pretending to be Keira Knightley (nb. you probably won't get a second date if you do this).
