Top 5 films to watch on a date

A film night is a dating classic. Make some popcorn, close the curtains and snuggle up on the sofa. The question is, what to watch? Here are a few suggestions...

             Soulmates Ewen and Renee

Down With Love. Yes, it's a romcom, but it's better than your average Jennifer Aniston vehicle. Set in the 60s and starring Ewen Macgregor and Renee Zellweger, this is stylish, funny and has rather a large twist at the end. It's even got Niles from Frasier in it!

            Soulmates Heath and Jake

Brokeback Mountain. It's true that it ends rather badly, but the rugged romance of the Wyoming mountains, not to mention Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, is spellbinding. It's a bit of a weepy, so provides a perfect opportunity for hugging up together.

            Drew Barrymore

Scream. It's a tried and tested method of getting a little bit closer to your date; put on a scary film and provide a comforting hand to be held in the jumpy bits. The downside is that Zombie Murder Party: Part 4 might not quite set the mood you want on a date. Scream is a little different from your average horror film as it's not just unremitting grimness and tension, there are a lot of laughs in there too.

            Amelie

Amelie. Is it a romcom? We're not sure. There's plenty of rom, not so much com, but, whilst this one verges on the saccharine, it retains enough charm and quirks to make it a good choice. And it's set in Paris, city of romance, non?

            Soulmates Cary and Katherine

Philidelphia Story. Forget any of that Hugh Grant nonsense, this is the ultimate wedding film. Fantastic screen-chemistry abounds, there's lots of flirting and smart-talking plus the glamour of Katherine Hepburn and the suaveness of Cary Grant. What more could you want?
