Top 5 retro dates

Dinner, drinks, film? That's all very sophisticated and everything, but how about something completely different? Remember the delights of primary school trips and pre-teenage birthdays when you had huge amounts of fun and laughed till you were sick? Why not translate that into a fabulous blast-from-the-past style dating experience (tip: leave out the sick) with these vintage ideas?

1. Roller disco

Online dating roller skatingWhether you're a proficient skater or not, a roller disco is fun. Doing an activity together on a first date is a brilliant ice breaker and takes a bit of the pressure off if you're feeling nervous; you won't find yourselves tongue-tied and staring at each other across a table. A spin on the skates will also give you ample opportunity for hand-holding if you feel that the chemistry is fizzing.

2. Laser tag

What could be more fun than running around in the dark trying to shoot each other? Laser tag is a popular past time and there is certain to be a centre near you, whatever your area, as well as a fast food joint within easy reach for post-match sustenance. Another great ice breaker and perfect for the latent Star Wars fanboy or girl within you.

3. Theme Park

Not an emotional rollercoasterWe have proof that a theme park is a good choice for a first date. You'll be giddy with excitement about the rollercoasters, can huddle up together on the ghost train and spend the inevitable queueing time getting to know each other. Theme parks are pretty much ten a penny in the UK, so take a risk and suggest this to your potential date.

4. Go karting

A little friendly competition can do wonders for a fledgling relationship. Whilst you may think you'll barely have any time to talk to each other, what with whizzing round the track/crashing into piles of tyres, you can only race for so long, then you'll be able to retire for a bite to eat and a post-race discussion.

5. Arcade

Don't be a space invaderSomehow arcades are more fun in a seaside setting, but you'll do just as well in a land locked area. If you're going truly retro then it's got to be Space Invaders, Pac Man, Street Fighter or Mario Brothers, something with plenty of two player action. If you find you've still got the energy, jump on the dance mat for extra fun. Guaranteed laughs.
