Alfresco Dating

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip hooray! But as this is Britain we can't be sure when he'll take it off again so we should probably be making the most of it. With that in mind we've compiled a list of our top five ideas for an outdoors date.

Eating and drinking outdoors

It's a summer classic. Whether you're on a posh restaurant roof terrace, picnicking in the park or just having a pint in a pub garden it's undoubtedly enhanced by a spot of sunshine. The National Trust have got some great suggestions for lovely picnic places here.

Boating

Unless you're a seasoned oarsman or woman you might spend the first 10 minutes paddling round in circles, but what's a bit of mild irritation between friends? Once you've got the hang of it it'll be all idyllic and lovely, whether you're punting in Cambridge, rowing on the Serpentine or taking a turn on one of the many boating lakes round the country. And for the terminally uncoordinated, there's always the pedalos.

Outdoor entertainment

Film? Theatre? Music? All great ideas for dates but the last way you want to spend a summers evening is crammed into a dark room with 500 sweating people. There are a huge amount of outdoor venues all over the country offering a dizzying array of entertainment. Fancy a film on Blackpool Sands? A play in a disused copper mine? Well, you can have both. And as for music festivals, you can't step out of your front door without tripping over one. For more ideas, check out Enjoy England.

A walk in a garden

We're not suggesting a stroll down the crazy paving to peruse your marigolds,  something more along the lines of a botanical or ornamental garden. Relaxing, fragrant and beautiful - what could be better? Britain has an embarrasment of lovely gardens, check out a few here. (Make sure your companion doesn't suffer from hay fever though - red eyes and a runny noses don't make for happy dates).

Clambering about in trees

If you're a rough and tumble type and you like your dates a bit more action packed we recommend Go Ape, a high wire forest adventure course. Think a grown up adventure playground. There are 17 locations around the country so there should be one fairly near you. For more information click here.
