Barely regal

Love it or loath it, the royal wedding is fast approaching (and if the republican singles amongst you aren't keen, at least you get an extra day off work). Prince William was lucky enough to meet Kate Middleton at university but if he hadn't, online dating would have been perfect for him, being a modern kind of chap. He could have pursued a few ladies away from the glare of the media and got to know them a bit before going on a date. He'd at least be able to explain in advance why he was going to turn up with lots of men with guns talking up their sleeves and looking under all the tables.

This got us thinking, which other royals might a dating website have worked for? Here are our top three...

1. Henry VIII

If there's someone who'd have appreciated online dating, it's Henry VIII. Going on a few light hearted dates might have been a better way of finding the perfect queen rather than marrying every woman in sight and then chopping their heads off when they had a row.

2. Elizabeth I

Surrounded by dastardly blackguards who wanted to marry her so they might be king, online dating would have allowed Elizabeth to look beyond court and opened up a whole new dating pool of decent, down-to-earth blokes who just wanted to take her out to see the latest Shakespeare blockbuster or stay in with a nice bottle of mead and some lute music.

3. Edward VIII

Edward VIII was a truly modern gent, prepared to shake off the stuffy shackles of being king for the sake of the woman he loved. Edward would have been perfect for online dating: we imagine he'd have enjoyed himself going on lots of dates, as he clearly liked a bit of a drink and a party, and then settling in for the long haul once he'd found the perfect woman. Classic stuff.
