Dating on Bonfire Night
Got an MSF date this weekend? Good. This time of year presents the opportunity for something a bit different and a lot of fun: Bonfire Night. "But why are you at mysinglefriend.com so enthused about this evening as a date?" we hear you cry. "Isn't it just standing around shivering whilst small children teeter around perilously near to fires waving sparklers and the only things to eat are limp burgers and candy floss?"
Perhaps it was so in the past. But the time is ripe to reclaim November the 5th as a grown-up and dating friendly event. Here's our guide to the perfect Bonfire Night Date.
1. Pick a good venue
The larger the city or town you go to, the better the event will be. All the major cities will have a host of fireworks displays which are all guaranteed to be pretty spectacular, and will lay on a good selection of food stalls plus a bar where you can buy something to warm your cockles. If you're in London and you want to make it a really special evening, book a ticket for the last trip of the London Eye at 8pm on Saturday. Beautiful views of night time London with the added bonus of every single firework display within a 20 mile radius. It's guaranteed to be a special experience.
2. Dress sensibly
Early dates require some carefully thought out sartorial choices, it's true, and 'sensible' probably isn't top of your list for making a good impression, but bear with us on this. As we've mentioned before, lots of winter clothing can be just as attractive as the skimpy summer stuff: a quality coat plus a lovely, chunky jumper looks good on everyone. You'll be nice and warm and you can take it all of when you go elsewhere later, thus revealing your favourite new blouse/shirt/vest/spangly top/rugby shirt etc. This way you can enjoy the show and make oohing and aahing noises in comfort.
3. Take a brolly
It's the UK, it's November, it could well rain so take a nice, big umbrella along. There's a lot to be said for snuggling up together under a brolly - plenty of opportunity for getting closer to your date if you find that the sparks are flying. If you want to be the best date ever, think about bringing along a flask of some type of warming beverage, perhaps laced with an even more warming spirit. Think coffee with a dash of whisky or hot chocolate with a slug of brandy. Don't be tempted by tea and vodka though; it doesn't work and they'll probably think you're mad.
4. Plan ahead
Once the fireworks are over you'll need somewhere to go on to, so you can warm up and have a sit down. Check out the venues near to the display beforehand and think about what you want: a drink, dinner, a film? If you're in an area that you aren't familiar with it's a good idea to know where you want to go so you aren't spending hours tramping the streets searching for somewhere you like the look of. Doing an activity like this before you move on to the sitting down and talking bit is a great idea for a first date as it takes the pressure off and gives you something to talk about to get the ball rolling.
And that's it. We hope you all have a fab fireworks night whatever you're up to and remember: follow the firework code.
