Plant lovers are the best lovers

Being scientifically-minded and horticultural loving bods here at mysinglefriend.com, we recently donned our white coats and took a survey, alongside the Flower Council of Holland, of 10,000 MSFers to find out whether the type of plants you own makes any difference to your pulling power.

Violets: thoughtful and nurturingIt turns out, it does. Apart from the fact that a plant or two around the house makes it a nicer place to look at and enables you to breathe more easily, they quite literally make you more attractive. 82% of the people we polled said that green fingers would make them more likely to continue dating someone, whilst 77% said they would be less inclined to do so if their date couldn't even look after a houseplant, perhaps because if you can't even remember to water your spider plant once every three months, you aren't going to be much cop at birthdays or anniversaries.

But it goes deeper than that, as the type of plants that you own also send out their own messages. If you own something exotic like a yucca or a palm you're likely to be a bit adventurous in the bedroom, according to 44% of respondents. If you prefer the flowering type of plant like violets or hyacinths then 51% of people asked would see you as a nurturing and thoughtful type, and those of you who own plants that need little care, such as ivy and peace lilies are viewed as strong and independent.

So, if you haven't already got one then nip to your nearest garden centre and buy a couple of plants. Manirma Vries of the Flower Council of Holland says "Houseplants don't just look great but they bring great benefits to their owners such as cleaning the air, reducing stress and making us generally healthier and happier people. Now this research shows that they can boost your love life too."

A quick tip on plant buying: if you don't think you're going to have much time to tend to your new flowering friend, get yourself an orchid: they look very impressive and rather sophisticated, but actually thrive on neglect. Perfect!
