Keeping personal details safe

Wednesday, 25 June 2008

The safety of the community is of paramount importance to us at MSF and it's vital that you take it seriously too. We've noticed that the new safety section on your homepages has not been clicked on very much, so we'd like to give you a bit of a prod into having a thorough read.

It has been brought to our attention that people are giving out personal details after only one or two mails have been exchanged. Whilst it might seem like a good idea to give out your full name so that potential dates can check you out on social networking sites, bear in mind that you don't know this person and they may end up knowing more about you than you want them to at this stage.

Similarly, avoid giving out personal email addresses that include your surname or your work email address. Any information that may lead someone to be able to find out where you live or work should be kept private. It's really just common sense. You wouldn't give any of this information to a stranger who said hello to you on the street, so you shouldn't do it online either.

Contacting people through the site gives you the opportunity to anonymously message or talk to someone before meeting them. It's a good idea to keep things anonymous at first, just so you can have a chance to learn a bit more about a person before you go on to set up a date.

Be a bit prudent with your personal info. If the person you're mailing is the right one for you, there'll be plenty of time in the future to tell them all about yourself.
