There seems to be a little bit of competition between Doug and his friend Carol...

"Doug is very competitive about his ability to acquire a great tan," writes Carol. "When he came back from Goa I avoided him for a month so it could fade."

Doug reples: "I'm not competitive but I have learnt that Carol (as a South African) takes great offence at a Celt like me turning a deep shade of mahogony at the merest exposure to the sun. Aside from these petty jealousies, we're pretty good friends apart despite Carol's girlfriends launching themselves at me at any given opportunity back in the early days (normally when I wasn't looking)."
