Faint heart never won fit lad - ladies be proactive, email, email, email. If you don't email the bloke you fancy someone else will. Doubly true for the lads. Wait and you get nothing.

X-factor your photo - what would Simon Cowell say about your main photo? What score would he give it out of 10. Be brutal. As a man I can say we are shallow creatures and will generally rate your photo from 1-10 and only the top scorers get an email or a reply from our inbox. One point could be the difference between winning and losing.

Overcome those nerves - Once you've established a connection over a five or six e-mails, don't be shy on suggesting a date. Many daters talk to a few people at once, and will lose interest if you don't seem keen to take the plunge. What have you got to lose?

Feed your coffee addiction - let's face it, it's all about the chemistry, spark and connection. You can't get that from a photo or email so make your first meeting a mini-date of 20-30 minutes at max and keep it to a coffee or a quick drink during the day. Feel the connection, see the spark or conversation is all going on? Make a second date!

No? Move on. It will save you a lot of time, money and bad dates.

No pain, no gain - go into the reality of internet dating with eyes wide open. For every ten emails you send, you will probably only get 2 or 3 back. This is ok, it happens to everyone. People might be in between payments, they might think you are fit but that other person who emailed is slightly fitter, or they just might not like brunettes. They might be on holiday, who knows. Console yourself with a glass of vino and the thought that the same thing is happening to everyone else too! If you know what the odds are, you can put on enough bets to get look in.

What are your top tips? Had any experiences you would like to share? Agree or disagree?
