If you we're to ask Bernie's friends to sum him up in one phrase they'd say "nothing is too much trouble." In fact, this is a complete understatement, he is friendly, loyal, generous and driven to help others. The fact that he has just been awarded an OBE (for services to charity) is no surprise.
He also has enormous empathy, he can be carrying the responsibility of leading a team up Everest one day, opening a school in Kenya the next, and chatting and laughing over a cuppa the next. However, no matter what the situation, his indomitable sense of humour is always to the fore. He has an ability to see the funny side in the most challenging situations. However, besides being courageous, he is also very modest, and nothing matters more to him than getting involved in his charities at a grass roots level, and making a difference personally.
Bernie is everyone's friend, and what would make his life complete is the opportunity to devote himself to that "someone special," someone he could devote himself to, someone who would care about him as much as he would undoubtably care about her.
