I could tell you what a beauty Hannah is, with a sort of nip-waisted style that looks like she's from another era. Add in the lovely, slightly posh voice, and you've got a Keira Knightly without the excess of teeth. But then, I could also tell you what Hannah looks like armpit-deep in mud, or just after a run, or an erg...

I could also tell you how extremely clever she is, a published Roman historian, working at Oxford, and a really talented teacher, but you mustn't mistake that for being serious. I'll seen her give an impromptu cabaret version of 'Be My Guest' while dressed as Marlene Dietrich, I've seen her dressed as a Fury with gummy snakes clipped in her hair. We've danced to Bryan Adams while (both) dressed as Amelia Earhart. I don't think she's turned down an opportunity to get into fancy-dress in her life. Perhaps that's why she likes rowing. They let her wear a lycra onesie.

Hannah is the designated baker at every occasion where more than three people meet (oh, the cakes), and a seriously talented seamstress. She spends a lot of her time making or baking something to make someone else happy, or to help them out. She is extraordinarily generous, and a bit of softie, so don't let the appearance of British reserve fool you. This one's a gem.

What is she not? She's not fake nails, full-face make-up, Saturday-night-on-the-lash, or soap-operas. She's not a drama-queen, a game-player or a mean girl.

As to what kind of person I think might suit her: someone happy in his job, who can be proud of, not threatened by, what Hannah does; someone left-leaning; someone independent; someone who knows a good box-set when he sees one; someone who can be serious, but occasionally a bit silly. Every so often, we do something to send ourselves up, so if the thought of sloe gin, Jeeves and Wooster, Cadfael or the Eurovision Song Contest sends you into a cold sweat, perhaps that's not a good sign.
