I'm John. I live in Hertford UK.
I've revised my profile to emphasise distance is an object - for unknown reasons whatever distance filter I try I still get expressions of interest from, for example, Inverness and as far as Moscow and Malta. This will not work, since unless either of us has a spare West wing to give us time to get acquainted building a relationship will involve too much travel and stress. 20 miles or so is OK but let's be realistic please. I'm looking for a long-term, probably last relationship in my life not a regular weekend trip to Venezuela. If it works out I'm all for relocating, exploring ways of living either together or close to one another but I'm not a love-commuter.

I ran a small (computing) business for many years and with varying degrees of success before I was invited to take up a post as a university lecturer which I did for 2 years before retiring. Over the years I have travelled widely, and spent a year in Russia, and in China. After graduating from UCL (in Philosophy) I spent a year in Paris.
I am left-wing so I might irritate someone who isn't! My main source of physical exercise is walking - I try to do 5 miles a day but never quite do. I am a member of The Ramblers so that keeps me enthused! I enjoy cooking, and sourdough bread is a passion. I am very opinionated about good bread.
I wash up as I go - a response to a specific often-heard criticism of male cooks.
I enjoy good food, wine - all the usual earthly pleasures. I value intelligent company but try to avoid being too earnest! I don't go for snobbery of any kind, and celebrity 'culture' is not my thing.
I'm not terribly fond of dogs, cats or other pet animals although have no problem with goldfish. Horses are OK, provided they're not kept in the house. For the right woman I will try hard to accept pets, but not horses in the house. There are limits.
I have a question for women on this site which might guide me. Why the obsession with travel in particular to Italy? I am genuinely intrigued!

Looking for someone around my age who doesn't see age as a barrier to anything, or as an excuse to give up questioning & wondering at things - don't expect 100 percent agreement or coincidence of interests or beliefs - difference is healthy. However, I am pretty left-wing and would prefer someone with that political persuasion.
I am a straightforward male human looking for an exclusive heterosexual lover and partner to spend the rest of my life with. 'Lover' means what it implies - I am still interested in a physical relationship but it has to come with the old-fashioned love and affection and be based on respect and care. Love and care and tenderness. I do not want faint-hearted diffidence - too old for that. If we like one another we go for it. I'm too old for hesitation or demure games.
I am (so far) a cancer survivor. I mention this because the illness might possibly mean a shortened life, but then I might also get run over by a bus. I am wary of buses, but recurrence of cancer is not something I can control. There is no sign of it coming back though.
I am certainly not wealthy but I am financially healthy and secure. No Lamborghini just an ageing KIA but enough for good food, holidays, a comfortable life and the gas bill. I am a fortunate person. If money is of interest to you then I will not be.
We're all getting older, so now is the time to change things I feel and put the 'we' back into my life.
I don't rule out cohabitation, or marriage but 'live apart, visit often' is OK too. I enjoy coupledom.
