Mala is one of the most stylish and independent people I know (could come from lots of travelling and living abroad in interesting places) but not in a scary way - she'll do something because she wants to do it, and if that means doing it on her own, that's OK too. I always think of her as a city chick (London, New York, Brussels, Buenos Aires...), but I've seen her looking chilled out in the Cotswolds and think a country pub or two would suit her quite well, as long as they serve espresso.

Family and friends are important to her and she is one of the few people I know who remembers birthdays, childrens' names, important dates and always manages to find the perfect present. Mala has no idea that she's really rather clever, and has done some interesting jobs over the years, mostly on foreign affairs-type stuff. Besides all the usual London stuff, she reads a lot, knows her way around a wine list (thanks to wine-tasting classes - nothing like a good education) and has an impressive range of shoes...

She's also a bit sporty - mostly running, but she's dabbled in triathlons and probably other sports that seemed too much like hard work to me. And she can cook. What more could anyone want?My favourite memory of Mala? Turning up in Argentina to stay with her, mentioning that I'd just got married to the guy I was with (she'd not met him before) and Mala, totally unfazed, saying "OK, so I'm on your honeymoon..?" That's friendship!
