Everyone writing on this site says their friend is perfect. That's what loyal friends do. But it's Susan's imperfections that make her lovely. She's clever, chatters on but misses nothing, and cares about the feelings of others for their own sake, not hers. Star qualities in a Nurse and rare qualities in a partner.

Susan has just driven off into a foul wet night after a lovely evening full of her silliness, laughter and cool common sense. She arrived tired from a long shift but still had enough reserves to warm me from a dreary day. We laughed about her constantly building hurdles to overcome before joining a dating agency. "I'll join when I've sorted my career, I'll join when I've eaten pavlova on top of Pen Y Gent, I'll join when I've whitewashed the puppy, I'll join when... but remember the Haiku "No, wait a minute, I can't be dead yet, I was just about to..." She's waiting to be perfect for her date, typical of Susan to be thinking about YOU first. In truth she wants a nice, normal, naughty bloke, someone to mull over the minute and plan over the year with. Cosy fires, chilling wine and a plan for adventure hovering on the horizon. No big deals or fanfares, yet she would definitely bring a life full of potential, opportunities, surprises, she wants the mundane mixed with the magical and why on earth not?

My children describe her as cheerful, fun, helpful and kind, and we know what sort of critics they can be.

I admire Susan's resolve to get out there again. And she does make stonkingly good Pavlovas. Grab your pastry fork, picnic rug and diary. There's more to life, and she's right here.
