Well, where to begin with our Stephen... I have known him for 16 years(!) and despite him having lived in New Zealand and Spain and travelled the high seas in this time he is one of my best friends. This could be because his sense of humour and patience has meant it's been so easy to stay in touch and he is not judgemental or cynical, which means he always seems to have a fresh take on things. That's not to say he can't be arsey though as he really can (!) and he's got a quirky/alternative side that can be quite infuriating. He'll probably edit that out though ;-)
What I mean is that he can be quite opinionated and a pursue a conversation doggedly if he thinks you've got the wrong end of the stick - but he won't bear a grudge or patronise you, which I think makes him excellent company.
He also has an interesting and weirdly eclectic (he'll probably hate that word too) cultural awareness - be able to recite back catalogue Johnny Cash and also play the latest house music as if it's all one big bag of the same thing. If you go on a date with him and get along, it's likely that you will be listening to all sorts of tunes late into the night, consuming lots of wine and/or Jack Daniels.
Which obviously brings me to his party, party side. Stephen is really up for a good time and happy to go with the flow - or equally have everyone back to his lovely flat where he will just let everyone get on with it - the best kind of host, in my opinion.
He is also a great "uncle" to my son - in fact, suprisingly natural and definitely a favourite when he comes round - and great friends with my husband who he goes to rugby matches and gets drunk with. There is one downside and that is he works on some of the world's biggest cruise liners as a top engineer so is not around as much as we would like ... I maybe should have said that first but don't hold it against him as he's so much fun you should go for it and see what the future holds ...!
